We are beyond excited to welcome Mary Cork and Bianca Chu to the Procreate Project team.

Thanks to the Arts Council England Emergency Response funds via the The National Lottery, we are able to have new incredible professionals join the team.

Mary Cork – Creative Development and Programme Consultant

“ Though it can be an incredibly joyous and creative time in one’s life, the impact of motherhood on career development in the arts is undeniable. This is something that has affected me personally. Procreate Project is doing important work to create innovative programmes that support contemporary artists who are also mothers and I’m delighted to join the team to help them with delivering their mission to effect systemic change in the arts, cementing a much needed place for the topic of motherhood in current arts discourse.” – Mary Cork

Mary Cork has over 15 years of experience in both not-for-profit and commercial contemporary art. Her previous work has included developing, curating and delivering visual arts projects, and supporting arts organisations such as The British Council, More Than Ponies, Block Universe, Whitstable Biennale, Open School East, Auto Italia and Studio Voltaire.

Until January 2020, Mary was Head of Development at Wysing Arts Centre, and before that Director at both Pilar Corrias Gallery (2016–18) and The Approach (2011–16). She has lectured on BA Culture, Criticism, and Curation at Central Saint Martin’s and BA Fine Art at Arts University Bournemouth, amongst others, working with students through curating and professional development workshops, seminars and lectures. Mary holds an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Bianca Chu – Sales Development and Strategy Consultant

“I am delighted to be joining the Procreate Project team as sales development and strategy consultant. Procreate Project’s ethos and its work supporting artists who are mothers is urgent and important, now during these difficult times but also, always. As a woman in the art world, having worked in the art business for almost a decade, the imbalance and invisibility of women artists, in particular those who are also care-giving, deserves our attention and action. I look forward to working with Dyana, Paola and Mary on cultivating and growing the network of collectors and supporters of PCP and its artists, and being part of the team of this ambitious and multi-faceted organisation.” – Bianca Chu

Bianca is an independent curator and art consultant based in London. Previously the deputy director of S2 Gallery, the exhibition arm of Sotheby’s, Bianca curated and produced an extensive programme of exhibitions and publications, focusing on artists often perceived as on the margins of art history, aiming to grow their visibility on the secondary market through collaboration with galleries, artists, estates and institutions. Prior to Sotheby’s, Bianca was the Head of the First Open London auction and the post-war and contemporary department at Christie’s South Kensington. She is a member of the Ambassador committee for the Tate Young Patrons and advisor to the Kim Lim Estate.

We will be working with Mary and Bianca on:

– Reviewing and expand the support we offer to artists in our community

– Review our business plan which is subject to fundamental changes due to the COVID-19 crisis

– Work on organizational development activities and strategies to strengthen its longer-term sustainability and widen its social and cultural impact

– Pay artists to produce new work for a total of 10 commissions

– increase our online presence and grow the art sales and network for our online gallery/shop. Via this platform we will be supporting and featuring up to 40 artists

– secure the optimal strategic direction for the organisation

– implement and grow existing and new platforms

We are excited to be offering the opportunity to join Procreate Project’s team to an Art Sales Consultant

Job Type: Part-time freelance basis

Project Fee: £2500 + commissions

Location: London, UK

Tenure: Fix-term role

This is a unique opportunity to join Procreate Project’s team at a very crucial yet exciting time. Procreate Project is a pioneering arts organisation driven by an ethos that strives for innovation and sociocultural impact. The main aim is to support the professional development of contemporary artists who are also mothers, working across disciplines.

After seven years from its conception, Procreate Project is at a brick of manifesting its vision and being established in the wider art world.

The successful candidate will actively engage in planning and delivering a sales strategy, perform sales and develop a client database contributing to Procreate Project’s longer-term sustainability and widen its impact and outreach.

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of contemporary art, proven experience in sales, and would be passionate about gender equality and the championing of women artists.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Implement sales strategies and develop new clients by increasing the reach of the organisation
  • Follow up offers and maintain an open dialogue with clients, museums and artists regarding available works
  • Place key artworks in important collections through working with clients and museums
  • Business and Client Development
  • Represent Procreate Project at industry events across museums, art fairs and auctions Research and develop the organisation collector list
  • Set contact strategy for working with key prospective and existing collectors

Experience Required

  • Considerable experience in sales
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the art markets
  • Have a proven network of collectors including relationships with institutions
  • Have an established base of collectors in London with a focus on contemporary art and women artists
  • Excellent customer service, and established relationships with clients

Person specifications:

It is essential that the Art Sales Consultant

  • Has a strong interest in Procreate Project’s work and its mission
  • Has at least two years experience of working in the arts, with artists and
    arts organisations, in ways which align with the responsibilities summarized above
  • Has an expanded knowledge on online marketing and sales
  • Is well organised and possesses strong administration skills;
  • Is highly motivated and able to work as part of a team;
  • Has Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and is confident communicating in writing and in person;
  • Has the ability to represent Procreate Project to artists, organisations and the
    general public.
  • A team player, highly motivated, mature, meticulous, independent,
  • Possesses determination and drive to achieve targets

This role is offered on a freelance basis with heightened activity from September 2020.

We are beyond excited to announce that Procreate Project was awarded a grant from the National Lottery through Arts Council England Emergency Response funds.

Due to the COVID-19 breakout, our public programme had to be delayed and potentially cancelled for 2020. The grants received for the opening of the Mother House Studios have been frozen stopping us from developing operationally and increasing the support that our platforms offer to artists. At the brink of manifesting the vision we’ve been working towards for the past 7 years this pandemic put Procreate Project at risk of total collapse.

Therefore we are grateful for the support and trust received from Arts Council and the National Lottery and its players for making it possible for Arts Council England to fund us.

Our proposal and what we will invest the grants towards:

Now more than ever Procreate Project’s work it’s crucial for its community.

We support the work of an under-represented category, artists who are mothers/parents. Generally, talents are lost due to caring responsibilities and lack of support and/or because of their lower socio-economic background. Even more now the pressure for them increases hugely. For those with caring responsibilities, an infectious-disease outbreak is unlikely to give them time to develop new work, especially if they are not getting paid for it, or have no opportunities to show it. A pandemic magnifies all existing inequalities. As much of normal life is suspended for three months or more, job losses are inevitable, even more for artists and freelancers with caring responsibilities. The ones who already would have fewer opportunities for representation and networking are left, once more, at the edge of the feminist discourse and the economy responses to the pandemic.

School closures and household isolation are moving the work of caring for children from the paid economy—nurseries, schools, babysitters—to the unpaid one.

Mothers are at the root of a universal yet diverse community. We will work towards dissolving barriers between artists and audience, the domestic and the public; bringing art into people’s lives and bringing people into other’s lives, through art.

Having financial support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England will help us stay alive by:

– Covering essential operational costs

– Support artists in our community

– Review our business plan which is subject to fundamental changes due to the COVID-19 crisis

– Work on organizational development activities and strategies to strengthen its longer-term sustainability and widen its social and cultural impact.

We will:

– Pay artists to produce new work for a total of 10 commissions

– Work with sector specialists to increase our online presence and grow the art sales and network for our online shop. Via this platform we will be supporting and featuring up to 40 artists.

– Work with a fundraiser to secure the optimal strategic direction for the organisation.

* We will be advertising job opportunities in the next days.

** For the commissions and opportunity of a feature on our online shop we will priorities artists who have less or no access to addditonal support and grants.
