Vanessa Mitter

London, UK – Painting

Persephone, 2018-19

Oil, collage and pen on canvas

120 x 90 cm

£4500

Vanessa Mitter’s paintings are both exuberantly high-octane in terms of colour, but mordant in terms of their conceptual approach. Mitter’s paintings put the female experience centre stage. In her paintings and performances, she is interested in interrogating the history, particularly, of Expressionist painting, and the gesture. The narrative elements in these paintings are often autobiographical; but veiled.

In Vanessa Mitter’s paintings, the personal is treated as a pliant material, a source of affect and investigation, but also of fiction and performance. Collage, paint and pigment find a way onto the canvas in ephemeral expressive gestures. – Alice Butler (Frieze Writer’s Prize, 2012)
