HARVEST (2018) – Fishes

smoke-fired fish, wall mounted or free-standing
7cm x 25cm x 5 cm

HARVEST is a large scale installation made entirely from clay (press-moulded, slip-cast and smoke-fired) that addresses the global issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and seas. It was made in response to the environmental tipping point exposed in the devastating statistic that, unless something changes drastically, by 2050 there will be a greater weight of plastic in the ocean than fish.

Mella Shaw is an artist using clay to make thought provoking objects and site-specific installations. Underpinned by a background in anthropology, museums and the study of material culture Shaw’s practice centres on reoccurring themes of balance, tipping points, thresholds and edges. While sometimes purely formal and at other times figurative, her strong but delicate work explores and confronts weighty themes of fragility and loss. Shaw has an energetic desire for exploration and uses a wide range of ceramic techniques in her work, both traditional and digital.
