Martina Hynan is a mother / artist / curator / birth activist based in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland.

My interest in motherhood and mothering began in 1996 when I curated an exhibition as part of a conference exploring contemporary and traditional birth practices.
This experience directly influenced my choice to have a home birth in 1998. Since then my passionate interest in maternal experiences and childbirth in particular has come to dominate my artistic practice and life. Over the years my role as mother / artist has combined my personal artistic practice with participation in women’s groups, creating community art projects with mothers and developing as a birth activist.
Since 2014, I have worked closely with the Elephant Collective, a birth activist group, curating and participating in a commemorative multimedia exhibition, honouring women who died in maternity services in Ireland in recent years. We are also campaigning for legislative change, seeking mandatory inquests for all maternal deaths in Ireland.
